It is unfortunate that some career service office professionals do not embrace their career coach brethren, but you're absolutely correct in identifying that split. Some of the career service office professionals feel threatened, others feel that career coaches are unqualified to provide career-related advice, and some fall a bit into both groups.

It will be interesting to see whether the two groups ever merge together. I won't be surprised if 10-20 years from now most colleges eliminate their career service offices and choose to outsource their work to firms which specialize in outplacement such as Lee Hecht Harrison. We can debate whether that would be wise or not but that's another discussion for another day.
