How to Make College Affordable

Posted by: Lauren Berger | Posted on: 09 14 2011

This blog was written by Dalida our campus ambassador from the Texas State University – San Marcos.

There are some personal experiences in my life that have made me become the person that I am today. One thing that I knew when I applied and got into college was that I did not want my mother to have to pay for my education. My reason is a story for another day. I will share with you ways in which you can make your college education affordable even during the hardest of times.

There is no doubt that this has been easy for me, but I am a natural hard worker so I have taken opportunities as they come. It has required me to make some sacrifices that have required me to give up some of the typical aspects of a college life but it was all worth it because I am happy to have done that as I am getting ready to start my last semester in college.

Community College: I took dual credit classes in high school. I remember my mom telling me to do two years of community college and then transfer to a university, but I didn’t want to do that. I wouldn’t trade my experiences for anything, but if I could do it over I would have taken by basic courses in community college. Community college is inexpensive when compared to a University, besides you need to have around 60 hours left in order to graduate with a University diploma.

Financial Aid & Scholarships: My senior year of High School, I applied for as many scholarships as I could, but no one told me how hard it was to get a scholarship. I maintained good grades and remained involved in my school’s successes. This is my fourth year of college and I have been awarded 2 scholarships, who would have thought? The thing I noticed is that people shy away from applying for scholarships because they think they won’t get it, but it never hurts to try. Look at me, I got two!

Be a Resident Assistant: Towards the end of my first year, I applied to become a Resident Assistant. I went through the whole process and I was chosen. This job isn’t a job for anyone; you have to make some sacrifices and that it what I did for myself. I gave up my regular schedule and traded it in for a full schedule of school, work and involvements. I learned a lot though and I was only able to do it because I love people and I wanted help financing my education.

Work: Most people work to pay their way through college that is what I did as well. I would work during the summer and save the money I earned, and then once I got to school I would work as a resident assistant.

Save more than you spend: I’ve noticed most college students love to spend. Well I do to, but I only buy what I really need not what I want. Use your meal plan if you have one, attend all the campus events that offer free food. Recycle and revamp your clothing or thrift shop, get those free shirts that are handed out for free at school events. Monitor your account and make a savings and spending for fun account, but do save more than you spend.

Give back: Always give back, even if you don’t get anything in return. Heard of the saying “karma comes back around,” well it does whether you notice it or not.

If you keep your eyes on the prices, you can get through any obstacles in your way.

Just do your best and the best will surely come your way!

Be Stress Free With Internship, Job, & School

Posted by: Lauren Berger | Posted on: 12 13 2010

This blog was written by Intern Queen Campus Ambassador, Ana, a junior at George Mason University. Ana is a communications major with a concentration in PR.

Being a full time college student, working part-time, and doing an internship can be not only time consuming, but incredibly stressful as well.

Finding time to do something for yourself can be difficult but it is even more important to do something with that time that makes you happy and relaxed.

So what do you do when you’re stressed out from school, work and all other things that take up so much of your time? What about zumba? Or even yoga? I have found these two very different types of exercises to be not only relaxing but amazing for my body as well.

Other than two years of volleyball in high school, I was never really active, and so running a mile for me can be very difficult. I started doing yoga at home because I was bit self-conscious to go to classes and figured that buying a DVD would work for me. Money well spent I would say! The DVD that I purchased is divided into morning and night yoga and it’s for beginners! I feel so relaxed after doing yoga and I also give myself a couple minutes to meditate and prepare myself either for a great day or a restful night.

Zumba on the other hand, is completely different from yoga! Recently, my sister asked if I wanted to go to a class with her and I thought why not? What do I have to lose except a couple of pounds, maybe? So I went with her and it was the best work out ever!

Not only are you constantly moving around, but it is actually fun! The dance moves that you learn you can use outside of the class. Every time my sister and I hear a song that is from our class, we just start dancing, wherever we are. And to those who are a bit self-conscious about dancing in front of a bunch of people, myself included, nobody cares what you look like when you dance. Everyone is there to have a good time, have fun, and tone his or her body. Your booty and legs might hate you for a couple of days if you put your all into it, but it is all worth it in the end.

Whether you’re looking to get rid of your stress by doing yoga or zumba, both will leave you feeling better than before. Also, since exercising releases endorphins, not only will you feel relaxed but you’ll feel happy as well.

What school do you go to and which exercise classes do you attend?

7 Reasons why Intern Queen Phone Is Valuable For Intern Applicants.

Posted by: Lauren Berger | Posted on: 10 28 2010

This post was written by Intern Queen Phone attendee, Zoe. Here is what she had to say:

The first Intern Queen Phone went live on Monday night and I was one of the fortunate people signed up to the chat with Lauren Peteroy from BWR PR. Here are 7 reasons why I would recommend joining for the next:

1. Intern Queen has initially done the work for you, contacting industry insiders from well known and respected companies for you to meet via conference call.

2. Start your networking! Introductions are made between like minded people searching for internships, Intern Queen herself; Lauren Berger, and whomever the insider is on the particular call.

3. Questions from yourself and the other intern hopefuls will be asked and answered during the call – so ask anything you like!

4. Learn about what is expected from interns and favored by employers to really start you off on the right track.

5. Personal tips and experiences are shared by the insider which allows you to really have a sense of what interning is really like.

6. You never know, you may even take away the insiders contact details at the end – all the better if you are thinking of applying to that particular company!

7. Get ahead of the competition!

My Intern Life in Maryland

Posted by: Lauren Berger | Posted on: 10 19 2010

In this blog, Intern Queen Campus Ambassador, Tara, shares her experiences interning in Maryland. Tara attends University of Maryland, College Park.

So my conversation with someone from somewhere other than the east coast usually goes like this: “So where are you from Tara?” , “Maryland”, “Maryland? Uh, where’s that?”, “….it’s  near DC”, “OHHHHHHH.” Okay lets be honest, Maryland isn’t the first state to come to mind, neither is it the ideal spot for someone (me) who is looking to intern in the entertainment business. I’m currently in my third year at the University of Maryland looking to major in marketing. I’ve lived in Maryland for about 16 years now and have been interning since high school (so we know interning IS possible in this state); it’s actually a great place to intern. My internships in Maryland have managed to have a great range as well. My first internship was for a marketing firm called Summit Marketing, who were more than glad to take on high school interns. You really just have to do your research and you’re bound to find something that interests you in your area. I then switched gears and interned for the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for almost two years. I’m telling you that I was able to intern for one of the most well-known and important government agencies without even stepping foot in the city. Not only are there plenty of opportunities in Maryland, but there are perks of living in a state right next to DC. I have the luxury of living just 30 minutes outside of the city, which has opened up a lot of opportunities for me and I’ve definitely taken advantage of it. Being only a 30 minute metro ride from DC enabled me to land a great internship at a entertainment marketing company called Allied Integrated Marketing. I am able to live and go to school in the suburbs, but intern in the city. A lot of the work I do can be done independently from home as well which makes it even more convenient. That’s another thing to keep in mind: virtual internships or independent internships are just as good so everybody should put those into consideration as well. This gives you a great lifestyle balance. I get the taste of both the suburbs and the busy city. Commuting from my home in Maryland to DC has made me feel more prepared and comfortable to work in the “real world” (as adults tend to put it).

Even though my dream is to move to Los Angeles one of these days to pursue a career in entertainment marketing, I am managing my intern life wonderfully living in Maryland. Don’t let where you live discourage you from interning, because it’s always possible. If you don’t find anything that suits you in your area, just head to the next big city because it’s probably just a short metro ride away. Just make sure to invest a smart-trip card and you’re golden.

Intern Queen Obsessions – Kembrel

Posted by: Lauren Berger | Posted on: 10 13 2010

This is a guest post from my current Fall Intern & Campus Ambassador, Chandra Robrock. Chandra attends Florida State University and runs the blog, http://fsufashiongirl.com/.

Last night, I went to see the new movie “Social Network.” In the movie, they mentioned that the main attraction behind Facebook compared to Myspace & Friendster was exclustivity. This instantly made me think of my newest obsession, Kembrel.

Kembrel is an online shopping website similar to Gilt Groupe, HauteLook & Billion Dollar Babes. All of these websites open up a sale on top brands such as French Connection or American Apparel. You can save up to 85% off but the sales only last for one or two days. They only offer a select number of each item so the earlier you browse the sale, the better your selection. Although the concept is essentially the same, there are a few key differences that keeps me coming back to Kembrel.

Kembrel is an online shopping designation created by college students, FOR college students. Every college student can agree that anytime we are bored or need to procrastinate studying, 9 times out of 10 you will find us wasting away our time on Facebook. Kembrel, although they have a website, is also a Facebook application meaning that you can be stalking your best friend back home one minute and the next, buying a fabulous party dress for your birthday weekend – it is literally that simple! Because you can access Kembrel’s sales through Facebook, Kembrel does not require you to register for their website. As someone who has numerous email accounts, one less password to remember is a dream come true. Other online shopping sites sometimes require an invite in order to join. Kembrel only requires a Facebook!

So if you are a college fashionista like myself, make sure you check out Kembrel so the next time that you are procrastinating a huge paper or test, you can find the perfect outfit to match!
