Jenn’s Take on “All Work, No Pay”

Posted by: Lauren Berger | Posted on: 02 1 2012

This is a post from our Campus Ambassador, Jenn from Arizona State University.

All Work, No Pay, is an amazing book that is going to not only benefit readers but also connect with so many people. Lauren Berger has a way with words, and is one of the best motivational speakers I’ve ever listened to when she spoke to students at Arizona State University. Here are some of my personal checklist of information that I acquired from All Work, No Pay. I know you’ll get the same great information from it too!

-          -The benefits of virtual and larger company internships.

-         - How to successfully conduct a skype/over the phone interview.

-         - How to properly ask for letters of recommendation.

-         - How to differentiate yourself when interviewing and really make a positive lasting impression.

-        –  How to effectively write an outstanding cover-letter.

I know this book is going to get everyone super motivated to get interning or even how to achieve your desired career goals! I can’t wait to keep learning from it and blog further! Until then, Facebook and Tweet your hearts out. #allworknopay #internqueenlove

Lauren Berger mentioned on Lifestyle and Charity!

Recently, Lauren was asked to host the Rock the Schools concert benefit in New York and had an amazing experience! Read the spotlight article from the event on Lifestyle and Charity!

Lifestyle and Charity

Friday nights are made for concerts, but not just any concert, Rock the Schools 2011 Benefit Concert, at the notorious Gramercy Theatre in New York City. A few of us fab Lifestyle + Charity editors were ready to roll with Rock the Schools. The concert ‘ headlining singer / song writer and huge supporter of the arts, Dion Roy. Dion grew up singing in choir and playing in band in High School and was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel and perform, which ultimately lead to his passion of music. Most of Dion’s song writing inspiration comes from love and trials in life. His latest single, “Hey My Love” has just been released on iTunes.

We also chatted with host, Intern Queen, Lauren Berger, who was privileged to participate in the benefit concert to help motivate students and put the art programs back in school. Her new book, “All Work, No Pay” hits stores January 2012. One Tree Hill star, Tyler Hilton, also expressed his support saying, “Sometimes to make it in this industry is a one and a million opportunity, so I will do anything to try and help those express themselves through music and art.” Other artists that performed included, Ryan Cabrera, How to Make it in America star, Bryan Greenberg, and special guest (triple threat) actor / singer / songwriter Val Emmich. Funds raised from the event will support music programs in NY State public schools, many of which have been faced with major budget cuts, and at risk of having their music departments cut all together.

What I Learned from the Intern Queen

“Don’t go after what’s available, go after what you want”. This quote was stated by Lauren Berger, the Intern Queen, who gave the most motivational speech at Arizona State University on Wednesday November 16th. It was definitely an evening full of amazing internship advice. I’ve incorporated my favorite advice that Lauren discussed and condensed them for you to remember within your future internship/job endeavors.

  • Have you sent in a resume for an internship? Contact the employer 24 hours afterwards to follow up. Lauren Berger landed her first internship after cold calling the employer and sending her resume within 24 hours which resulted in the employer being very impressed in her determination!
  • 3 valuable aspects to prepare yourself for an interview 1. Mock interview (your career center on campus is a great resource for this) 2. Wear business attire, preferably a business suit. Presenting yourself professionally is always a plus 3. Send a hand written thank you note after the interview. Lauren must have repeated this 3 times and on my paper I had this underlined/bolded as a key piece of advice.
  • We will all get rejected at some point, it’s a normal part of life.
  • Informational meetings are a great way to introduce yourself to a company that you may want to potentially work for one day.
  • Stay in touch with your professional contacts 3 x a year (fall/spring/summer).
  • Never decline an internship over email.
  • When emailing your resume & cover letter, always attach a word file and a pdf file for convenience for the employer.
  • Internships should challenge you.

Work Outfits meet City Nightlife: Make it Happen

Professional dress is flattering but it is often not fitting for a night out on the town. Rest assured there are multiple ways you can fix this!

1. Wear an appropriate length (and styled) open backed dress with a sweater to work. When you go out at night take off the sweater and reveal your sexy style: http://www.francescascollections.com/product/courtyard+dress.do?sortby=ourPicks . Choosing this option however does have its limits, as you cannot take your sweater of during the day, it would be unprofessional.

2. Pack your bag in the morning for the night! Add a fun belt, scarf, or earrings to jazz up your work outfit! Going from studs to dangly earrings makes any outfit sparkle.

3. You can also pack extra makeup such as eyeliner or eye shadow in your bag to jazz up your look to be nighttime ready. Think bare eyes gone smoky!

4. At the office, my long hair and I do not get along. Nine times out of ten, it finds its way into a messy bun at the nape of my neck. When you are leaving the office, take your hair down and let the carefree attitude ensue.

5. Change your shoes, a sure way to spice up any outfit. Daytime work shoes are often plain colored, such as black or tan, change it up with a pair of patterned pumps, pair of sling backs, or strappy sandals.

6. Leave your sweater at the office or in your car come the end of the day and show off your arms.

7. Kick up your heels and head out on the town.

How To Bring the Intern Queen to Your School

This blog is written by Silvia, our campus ambassador from Ithaca College.

Ever think of having an exciting speaker come to your campus? Well, I have and it’s
someone you all know, the one and only Lauren Berger, the “Intern Queen”. Getting Lauren
on my campus was no easy task but it’s something we’re all looking forward to. Here’s my
story on the steps I took, as a student at Ithaca College as well as treasurer of PRSSA (Public
Relations Student Society of America) to get her to come, and boy are we excited!

1) Spoke to Lauren’s agent on the process of getting her here and her availability.
2) Presented the idea to fellow PRSSA e-board members who were also thinking of
getting her on campus, as part of our big fall event.
3) Created a budget proposal for SGA (Student Government Association) in order for
them to allocate money.
4) Budget proposal meeting ( Dun..Dun..Dun..) This was the scary part, presenting to
SGA why it was so important to have her come, what difference it would make on
our campus, and showcasing her strong entrepreneurial skills.
5) Waiting for the response on the allocation.
6) GRANTED! YAY! We received full funding for the event….now to all the paper work.
7) Sending contracts, and paper work back and forth, surprisingly not as horrifying as I
thought it would be. Her people are easy to work with.
8) Let the promotions begin! Worked with Lauren’s advertising material to have it
relate to the Ithaca College campus.
9) Printed tons of posters posted them on numerous bulletins on campus, an
interactive bulletin online, press releases campus wide, and placed them on
numerous screen monitors.
10)Seeing Lauren is free of cost, but in order to attend you must have a ticket because
seating is limited. We decided to table on campus so people can pick up tickets and
priority seating was given to paid-dues members of PRSSA and AMA (American
Marketing Association).
11)Waiting for Lauren. All the work is done, now we must wait for the big event!

Hope these 11 steps were helpful to you, and the process of getting Lauren to your school.
Best of luck!
