Interns should be paid for their time, but some times companies don’t have the capital or desire to pay for a 5-days-a-week intern. It’s an unfair practice but what can you do? I just hope that the experience I’ve earned at my various internships allows me to jump ahead of the entry-level salary. I’ve basically already earned it.

I have to disagree with the college credit stipulation in Hearst’s argument. Sure, we are earning college credit for the hours we work, but at my college, we PAY for those credits as if they are lecture classes AND we must write at least 25 pages worth of reflections, staff interviews, research papers, etc. Not to mention travel expenses! I can’t possibly explain how much money I’ve spent on gas and car maintenance during internships. I enjoyed my experience and learned quite a but in the financial sense (and finding employment since I am now a student-debt ridden job-seeking college grad)…… There should be some sort of compensation to offset the cost to the student for an internship experience. I hope this case starts to gain some ground, even if it is a bit exaggerated for the small provisions that most unpaid interns would agree with.

Sometimes internships aren’t taken seriously, and I don’t like to see that. If I’m not getting paid, I’d rather get other benefits like experience, food, housing (if I have to travel far for the internship), or college credit (which is kind of like getting paid because we do pay for college classes).
