With the end of the semester quickly approaching, time to apply for internships is now, and we have some tips that you must rememeber this weekend when finding where you want to apply, writing your cover letters, sending in your applications.
* Create a document with the company name you are applying for, position, contact info., and date you applied. Also, add a note that reminds you to follow up in two weeks. Hint: When following up, hit REPLY if you applied via email. This way, your original email and attachments are right there if they need them; they aren't going to want to search!
* Address your cover letter to an actual person, NOT just "whom it may concern." You've heard it before, but many still do it. If there is no name to address it to, use LinkedIn to find the company and try to search for a human resources contact, or atleast someone in the department you are applying for. Once you've done this, you can find their email by looking on the site at the format of other contacts at the company. For example, contacts at Conde Nast are formatted as email@example.com. If you know the format, you can plug in the contact name. This way, you can add that email to your document to follow up with later on.
* Proofread, print and proofread again. Yes, that said print. At an internship, I learned that it is important proofread on screen, then print and proofread again, especially for important documents. You will catch much more errors when the paper is physcially in front of you, and you can take a pen and correct it. Afterward, head through the document and edit online, and reread again, and then you can hit send! You don't want to miss a great opportunity because of a simple misspelled word or puncuation mistake; no matter how great the writer, we all make errors in our first drafts and sometimes even our second, too.
