Employers, managers and supervisors are all human beings just like every other employee within a company. There are a number of reasons why an employer might initiate a confrontation with an employee. The cause of the conflict must often take a back seat to other issues because this situation places the employee in an awkward and defensive position that rarely ends productively. There are a few tips that can help an employee to handle an employer who has pressed a confrontation in the workplace. 

Avoid Engaging Emotionally 
If an employer is screaming and yelling or just throwing personal insults at a pharmacy tech, then it is important that employees ignore or disregard this type of behavior when handling the situation. Reacting to an employer with matching screams and insults will do nothing but escalate the situation and further enrage the supervisor. It is essential to remain calm and slightly detached from the situation since the employer will react negatively to any small inference, facial expression or accusatory statement. 

Attempt To Find A Realistic Resolution 
When the employer has reached a state where communication is possible the first step to take is to starting attempting to find a resolution to the problem. This involves speaking calmly in a professional tone and avoiding the use of words that assign blame to the employer or that make excuses for the actions in question. It is also important to avoid negative phrasing and statements that are absolutes since it can be perceived as a form of judgment. Asking the employer for a resolution is a good way to start framing the problem that is causing the confrontation and gives the employer a chance to regain the control that he or she might feel has been lost. Problem solving should be used to find some type realistic solution to end the incident. 

Avoid Appealing To Higher Management 
Moving directly past an employer towards someone with more authority is almost always a bad choice. This can create animosity that can result in a hostile work environment and possible termination. A higher management figure might also be completely powerless to take any type of action so no positive resolution would be reached. The exception is when the confrontation is not necessarily about work or when the employer has started to threaten violence or is visibly out of control. These are situations where an employee is powerless to resolve the conflict. 
Companies sometimes institute conflict resolution techniques in order to objectively handle situations that could quickly escalate out of control. These types of objective and neutral resolutions are often the best solution because neither party comes out of the confrontation feeling hurt or victorious. The most important thing to keep in mind when handling an employer confrontation is that both parties will have to work together when the argument ends.
