Last summer, I started as an intern at 96 Rock working for their promotions team. I operated daily remotes and coordinated large and small events, all while doing typical “office work.” Although not all the work was fun and glamorous, I thoroughly enjoyed my interning experience, especially working the large events. Once, I helped set up an entire concert in the middle of downtown Orlando!
One of my favorite events with 96 Rock was the Blues BQ event, which was held downtown in front of 96 Rock’s Amway Center. For this event, we started the set-up bright and early. We first had to work as a team to set up all of the tents, tables, and chairs for all of our sponsors and for the food and beverages. Working as a team made everything run smoothly and get done quickly! Next, we had to set up all of the barricades and chairs. The barricades were used to block off areas where people could not stand, and the chairs, of course, were used to provide people with places to sit and enjoy the show. After that, it was finally time for the concert! Throughout the concert, we had the responsibility of taking pictures and shooting videos of the crowd, working the ticket station and promotions tent, and rocking out to the amazing blues music!
Even when working, we still had a blast enjoying free food and listening to good music! Once the concert was over, we had the task of taking down everything we had set up. The Amway Center needed to look just as it had before the concert preparation began. Setting up and tearing down the event required a lot of work, but it was a great experience that provided me the opportunity to get a “behind-the-scenes” view of a large-scale concert. I will always remember the time I got to work the Blues BQ event with 96 Rock. I even meet famous Blues artist Buddy Guy!
