I know many of you are thinking of starting a blog – or maybe even have your own blog. It can feel like an overwhelming project to get started with. Here are some tips on how to make sure the process runs smoothly:
1. Have a Content Schedule. Treat yourself like the professional you are. If blogging is going to be a new thing for you – make it a real thing. Determine what type of content you are going to post, how frequently you will post it, and what days of the week different posts will go up. For example, with my new blog (LaurenBergerInc.com), we do career posts on Mondays and Thursdays, entrepreneurship posts on Tuesdays and Fridays, and fashion posts on Wednesdays.
2. Have a Mission Statement. This might sound unnecessary but I use my mission statement to keep me on track. For example, with the InternQueen.com website, the mission statement is to provide young people with advice and opportunities to help them succeed in their future. Whenever I’m debating about a certain blog post, I think about the site’s mission statement. I ask myself, “does this blog post agree with our mission statement?” For example, if someone pitches me the idea of doing a blog about a cool new workout routine and I run it by my mission statement – I’d decide NOT to post the blog – as working out has nothing to do with “helping young people succeed in the future”.
3. Be Consistent. How are you going to make sure you stick to your goal? I suggest starting out with a small commitment. Blog at least twice per week. If it’s going well after a few weeks you can bring it up to 3-4 times per week. Move slowly as this is a big commitment and there is nothing worse than a blog that’s rarely updated.
