Whether you’re studying in Florence, or interning in Madrid, sometimes it can be easy to forget just how lucky you are to be there. If you’ve got to the point where you’re strolling past the Colosseum without blinking twice, now’s probably the time to take a step back and start making the most out of your time abroad…
Travel to other places
Especially if you’re in Europe, the best way to make the most of your time overseas is to travel and explore as much as you can while you’re there. Who knows when you’ll next have the opportunity to do this; and with so many great cities just a few hours away and such cheap flights, you really don’t have an excuse not to!
Try new food
You probably thought you had quite an experimental palate when it comes to food... until you went overseas. Now you’re refusing to even try that steak extra tartare because it looks like it’s still alive. If this is the case, now’s the time to ditch your inhibitions and grab the bull by the horns, as it were. Trying new food is one of the best things about going abroad and you might even discover a new favourite dish in the process.
Learn the language
Even if you’ve moved to a country where English is widely spoken and you can get by fine with just “dónde está la playa” or “un demi s’il vous plaît” (both important things to know), it’s still worth trying to wrap your tongue around the language as it will only make your life easier. And who knows, you might decide you want to stick around once your internship/semester is over, and you’ll have a much higher chance of being offered a job if you can speak the lingo.
Make friends with the locals
Once you can hablar like a native speaker, you might as well speak to some of them as well. The locals are probably just as curious about you as you are about them, and it’s a great opportunity to learn about a new culture and exchange stories and ideas. They will also know all the best places to eat and secret beaches to go to, so you’ll be able to impress your friends with all your insider knowledge when they come visit you.
Do at least one thing that scares you
A widely known life motto, but never has it seemed so applicable as when you’re abroad. Chances are, there’s probably many more things that scare you overseas; which is all the more reason for going and doing these things in the first place. While it’s good to try lots of small new things each day, make a resolution to do at least one thing that you never thought you would, be that skydiving over the Swiss Alps or hiking up a volcano in Tenerife. These are the kind of experiences that define you, and help you realise just how much you’re capable of.
