One of the most important aspects of getting your dream internship is to have the perfect resume. Of course, everyone has different experiences, educations, and honors. However, there are certain “do’s and don’ts” of putting together a resume. At the end of the day, your resume can be the reason why you can get the internship or job over your competition. To have an organized and easy to read resume is key.
The number one rule of a resume is not to exceed one page. Although you may have a lot of experience, you have to be able to find a way to keep it to one page. Try combining some experiences and honors. Also, keep your audience in mind. Who are you sending your resume to? Is all the information you have on your resume necessary?
Another important aspect into organizing your resume is to strategically plan the order in your components. Most people believe that the first thing on the resume should be ones education. However, the first thing that should be listed is ones experiences. Even though education is very important, your work experiences are more important. Education should go second. After a potential employer sees ones experience, the next thing he or she will see is ones education. The “wow” factor of where you went to school will still be there!
Remember, it is extremely important to keep your resume clean and easy to navigate. A potential employer does not want to search or do any extra research for your information and qualifications. A resume is very important in the hiring process and you want to make sure that yours stands out compared to the thousands of other resumes!
