This blog was written by Shayna Dunitz, a spring intern for Intern Queen.
As my time as an Intern Queen intern comes to a close, I've been reflecting back on everything I've learned this semester. One of the most important and useful skills I've gained is knowing how to follow up. This is important not only for interacting with clients and possible press contacts like I did, but for internship and job applications, communications with fellow student organization leaders and even professors.
At first, I felt that I was being annoying by sending a 3rd, 4th or even a 5th email to someone. I mean, how many times do I have to email them saying "I just wanted to follow up and make sure my email landed in the right inbox!" I thought "they obviously do not want to speak to me." However, more often than not, I got a response around the 4th email saying they appreciated the follow up and have just been busy or didn't even see the email.
If you don't follow up, you risk loosing out on a new connections or important conversation. Even though it feels uncomfortable at first, practice makes perfect! Lauren stressed how necessary it was to follow up and now I follow up like crazy, for everything (and it's worked!). Whether you're ending your current internship, or you're getting ready to begin one for the summer, I urge you to remember this advice and follow up with anyone you contact!
