Even though summer is in full swing, a new school year is just over a month away, meaning the fall internship search has commenced. For all of the fashionistas out there who will be applying for internships within the fashion industry, we’ve got just the person you need to hear from! Her name is Casey Marks, Senior Merchandising Manager for the ever so popular magazine, TEEN VOGUE. Casey was kind enough to take some time and answer a handful of questions regarding her advice on how to land your dream internship and what she looks for in an intern.
Q: What is your morning routine like?
A: Pretty straightforward—shower, blow-dry, try on about three outfits, and run out the door. Sometimes I’ll work on a crossword puzzle after the shower to let my hair air dry a little.
Q: What is your go to outfit for the office?
A: Sweater and pants
Q: What designers do you think everyone should have in their closet?
A: I can’t speak for everyone, since style is so personal, but a few of my go-to brands for workwear are Phillip Lim 3.1, Carven, and Acne. Of course mixed in with H&M, Zara, and J.Crew.
Q: What are your three must have electronics for the office?
A: Computer, desk phone, and iPhone
Q: What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
A: You’re going to make mistakes. It’s not the end of the world. Consider each one a learning experience
Q: What tips do you have for someone who is currently trying to land their dream internship?
A: Be persistent and always follow-up.
Q: What are ways for an intern to stand out and be successful at their internship?
A: Work hard, ask questions, and share your opinions.
Q: How important is networking and keeping in touch with the contacts that one makes?
A: Extremely. It’s one of the best things you can do for your career.
Q: Why do you believe that internships are so valued and sought-after now more than ever?
A: I think internships have always been valuable. They teach you a lot about working in an office environment and with colleagues that you don’t necessarily learn in school. Internships can also help you get a head start on figuring out your career path by giving you the opportunity to discover what you like and don’t like about different roles and industries.
Q: What qualities do you look for when selecting new interns?
A: Smart, hard-working, articulate, professional, and persistent are qualities that come to mind. Plus, I think TEEN VOGUE is the best place to work, so I like to have interns who feel the same.
