Making Friends in College

This is a guest post from our current campus ambassador Amber Pennycuff. Amber is a sophomore at the University of Tennessee, majoring in journalism & electronic media, sports journalism & broadcast journalism.

You always see those movies where the girls are planning their wedding, and they have their best friends all around them.  Most of these friends they met in college or grew up with in high school.  Do you ever wonder…Will I ever have that opportunity? The answer is that you can!  I know it is hard to make friends in college because it seems like everyone already has their groups.  I have some points that could help you achieve the great bond of friendship!

1. Class - What better and easier way to make friends?  A great attribute about making friends in class are study buddies.  Believe it or not, you will need one by the end of your college life.  These are great ways to get involved with other people and make friends!  I know it can be hard to make that first step and introduce yourself, but scope out the people around you.  You’re sure to make a new friend!

2. Campus Clubs - Whether you are a SyFy guru or love hitting the weights, there are so many different organizations that you can get involved with on campus!  When I say that they have a group for just about anyone, it is no joke.  From religious organizations to the tumbling club, you are sure to find people who have the same interest as you do!  All you have to do is make that first step, and you’ll be set!

3. Greek Life - Now, I know exactly what you are thinking.  You have images of Animal House and House Bunny running through your mind at this very moment.  These movies are nothing what Greek Life is about.  Some people tend to say it is not for everyone, but you don’t ever know until you try it out.  Greek Life can get you involved with things on campus, meeting different people, and excelling academically.  It was one of the best decisions that I have ever made and fully endorse you to try it.

4. Sporting Events - Football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and swimming are just a few of the sporting events that your school may offer.  These are some of the most exciting times of college!  Sporting events are usually big traditions for schools; therefore, many students are more apt to join in!  You will have a chance to meet so many different individuals at games!  Sports are often one of the best bonding practices that you can experience!

All in all, college is one of the best times of your life.  Utilize this time to create friendships and make connections!  After college, some of those connections may pay off, such as being granted wonderful internships, business positions, or even getting backstage with your favorite band! I promise you that you will not regret it!
