Making a List and Checking it Twice!

We’ve all heard of the Christmas song “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” with warnings that Santa is “making a list, checking it twice,” but have we ever thought twice about it? We might be five months away from Christmas, but Santa’s list-making practices still apply to our every day intern grind.

As responsibilities pile up over the course of our internships, list making becomes essential. Sitting down and compiling all of our tasks onto one surface can really make a difference in productivity. Many psychologists claim list-making also relieves stress and tension. Lists also:

1. Bring order to chaos.

2. Keep us from procrastination.

3. Give us the satisfaction of completion.

So what about checking it twice? Making a list at the beginning of the day and checking to see if everything is there puts tasks into perspective. After a full day of milling around the office, it is beneficial to go back to that list, check items off and make notes for the following day. This practice alleviates any confusion and errors regarding the status long-term projects.

While the holiday season is far off, list-making is an everyday, secular practice utilized by millions, if not billions of people around the globe. So this week, start your list—and don’t forget to check it twice!
