"The purpose of life is life with a purpose" Robert Byrne
Yesterday afternoon my public relations teacher surprised our class with a guest speaker. Scott Westerman, who is now the "Alumni guy" at Michigan State University, stood up and asked our class, Have you ever really sat down and thought about how you want to spend the rest of your life??
He proceeded to tell our class about his life and the winding journey he has taken to get where he is today. Westerman started off his career as a broadcaster, then moved on to cable television and entrepreneur, and is now the Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations and Executive Director. He told us about how when people would ask him what he wanted to do for a living, he would say broadcasting simply because he had been working at a radio station since he was 14. He also studied broadcasting in college but when he got a job and started his career he realized he wasn&t happy. Westerman had to think long and hard about what he should do with his life, and he realized that he really wanted to work at connecting people and making lives better. So that is what he is doing today at MSU.
It&s never too late to set a new goal to strive for. It&s never too late to have a shot at true happiness. There are plenty of internships out there and any one of them can help you get your foot in the door. If you don&t know what you want to do or what really makes you happy then internships are a great way to help you figure it out. So keep putting yourself out there and eventually the pieces in your life will all fall into place.
