Most of the time when a person hears the word intern they think of a young person designated to getting coffee and making copies for the people that they work for. This is something that is a common misconception because interning is so much more (and in my case this common idea of the intern is completely false)! While some interns do help out with the “busy work” I would bet to say that most of us who have done an internship would beg to differ.
Doing an internship is more than just what you do while you are working; it is also about what you gain from the experience as a whole. Each and every internship is very different and you will leave each with very different skills. Here are some of the things that I gained while working on my internship and I am sure some of the other InternQueen ambassadors would agree!
1. Great Friends: Some of my very best friends today are friends that I met while interning for the Disney company! We did everything together so we became closer than even some of my friends from back home and I am very thankful for each and every one of them.
2. A New Skill: I had never worked in costuming before but I decided to give it a try…and I LOVED it! Interning allows you to try new things without being stuck to one skill. This lets you see what things you love while also getting to know which things you don’t care for.
3. Knowing I Will Be Okay in the Real World: When you are interning you get a feel for how things work in the real world. You get to see how very different it is compared to just being in college or working a non salary job. Working full time made me realize that I will definitely be able to hack it in the real world!
Clearly, I left with so much more than these three simple things but these are three things that I really feel changed my life in so many ways. If I could tell you all the things I gained from working at Walt Disney World than I could be here for days! Hopefully these are some of the things you will take away from your internships-along with many more!
