Want to Get Hired? You MUST have these 3 things!
Hello my Intern Queen readers! I'm coming at you with a brand new blog. As you may (or may not) know, we're doing a lot of hiring at Intern Queen and we've had a ton of turnover. Which is both good and bad. On one-side, it helps us bring new people into the mix and discover new talent to add to our team. On the flip side, it can be hard to maintain company culture when people are always coming and going. I've been doing a lot of interviews lately and lots of thinking about what I'm really looking for when it comes to new hires. Just to clarify, I'm talking about jobs (not internships) but the advice is transferable. Here's the three things I'm looking for in new hires:
1. LOYALTY. I want someone who wants to be here and wants to stay and grow with the company. I'd much rather work with someone who wants to be here long-term than someone who is going to job hop. As a small business owner, loyalty is key. And how long do they need to stay? I'd love for them to stay for at least two years but beyond that -- I'd like for them to build a career with my business. And I want to see that as an exciting opportunity.
2. RELEVANT EXPERIENCE. I don't care if you've worked in my industry before but I want you to draw a parralel for me. Tell me about an experience that you've had (professionally, personally, or at school) that somehow relates to the job you are interviewing for. Show me that you have relevant experience. Don't get too stuck on it needing to be in the same industry as the job you are interviewing for.
3. READY. I want to hire people who are ready for anything. Have an event? They are ready to go. Need to make a schedule? They do it with pride. Have a gift bag to stuff? They are excited to help. I want someone ready to do whatever the business needs them to do that day - and have a smile on their face. Peoplel who say things like "oh, I can't do that" or "I don't want to go to that event" or people who roll their eyes when assignments go their way - I'll do fine without them.
