What Emily Learned from the PRSSA Conference

This is a guest post from our campus ambassador Emily V. from Eastern Michigan State University. If you went to the PRSSA National Conference and would like to share your experience please comment below!

Last weekend, I attended the PRSSA National Conference in Orlando, Fla. Needless to say, even though I didn’t get to meet Mickey Mouse, I had a blast and I learned a lot.

Now, I know that not everyone who reads this blog is a PR major or minor, but there is a ton of advice that I got from the Conference that can basically help anyone out there. Here’s some:

Internships are the most important! How else are you going to get that experience you need before you can be hired? Just having a degree in your chosen field isn’t going to get you a job, you need to have real world experience. Plus, internships are fun. Since you’re at the Intern Queen’s site, you probably already know that!

  • One thing I learned during a Sports PR session about internships: there are always a lot of jobs in an internship that nobody wants to do. Do them – it will help you shine.

    • You have to master the skills you have before you can move up in the world. Focus on perfecting what you do know before you perfect what you want to know!
  • Network, network, network!: It isn’t just what you know anymore, it is who you know. Most jobs these days aren’t filled by people who submit resumes online or through snail mail – they are filled by people who know somebody at the company! Make sure you talk to people; you never know who you are going to meet! Attend on campus events, volunteer, talk to the customers you meet at your job – anyone could be someone important.
    • Engage! Face-to-Face. Personal connections will get your in the door!
  • Perfect your resume! Make sure your resume is tailed towards the position you are applying to. If it isn’t, it will be quickly passed over. Don’t use the same resume for every job you apply for.

Great tips from a PR conference, yes? Make sure to attend events and conferences like this in your own chosen field because you will learn a lot, have a great time, and meet awesome new people. Who knows, you might even find your dream job!
