Hey All - I hope you&ve been following my other blogs about weekend homework over the past two weeks. If not, click here and here to catch up. This weekend, I want you to clean up your social media. It&s like spring cleaning, but the online version. Here are a few easy steps to follow. They can be time suckers so block out some time on Saturday or Sunday to get these things done so you can be that much more confident about landing the opportunity you want. I know I&ve mentioned this before but employers ARE looking you up online, believe me. Are they supposed to? Doesn&t matter - they are doing it.
- MYSPACE. I know most of us are no longer using Myspace. If you are, go on your profile and remove any pictures that could be considered inappropriate. Even if you no longer log into Myspace, go on your profile and delete anything inappropriate. If an employer Googles you, your Myspace profile is likely to show up in their feed.
- FACEBOOK. Set your profile settings to private if you haven&t already. Scan over your wall and make sure none of your friends have left any inappropriate comments - curse words, jokes that could be take the wrong way - should all be deleted. Go through your photos (yes, ALL of your photos). Untag and delete any pictures that you wouldn&t want to show a future employer. Also, make sure your profile picture isn&t you half naked, throwing up, or with beer bottles in your hand.
- TWITTER. Delete any tweets where you bad mouth a job or internship opportunity, make negative comments, or use foul language.
